Recanati is a town in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region. It is principally known for being the birthplace of the poet Giacomo Leopardi, whose house where he was born and the historical centre where he spent most of his life can now be visited.

The centre of Recanati has a well-preserved mediaeval layout, with the majestic Piazza Giacomo Leopardi welcoming visitors with the 13th-century Palazzo Comunale and the Gothic Torre del Borgo. Also worth seeing are the Cathedral of San Flaviano and the Sanctuary of Loreto, a few kilometres from Recanati.

Giacomo Leopardi's house is located in the family palace. Today it is a museum that houses memorabilia, autograph documents and the poet's extensive library. The back garden is charming, with the famous 'Colle dell'Infinito' that inspired one of Leopardi's most famous poems.
